It's the Spookiest (and busiest) Time of the Year

October has turned out to be a very busy month for HIVE, and there's so much more on the horizon! Here is a recap of what we've been working on, and a little taste of what will unfold in the next couple of months.

From October 4th to October 6th, HIVE traveled out to Salem, Massachusetts for Haunted Harmonies! This unique vocal festival is paired with Salem's Haunted Happenings and street fair, so the entire town was done up, decked out, and provided a spooky atmosphere to the thousands of people from all over the world who came to visit one of the oldest cities in the United States.

From outdoor performances to an exciting competition (complete with costumes), Haunted Harmonies kept the festivities moving the entire day. We were honored to be able to perform at this event, as it was a pretty special one for us.

We were joined on stage by New England a cappella alumnae, Sarah Mercedes! Sarah helped us premiere brand new music like Lisa's Lighthouse, which incorporated our use of technology, and vocal improvisation. She also joined us on Moorea's original piece The Chant, which was written specifically for our Haunted Harmonies appearance. It included haunting operatic vocals, metric modulations with odd meters, and a truly terrifying parseltongue recitation by Nina, all finished with some singing in reverse. The night ended with a very special meeting with one of our Patrons. Visit www.patreon.com/hivevocal to find out on how you can become a patron!

This performance was right in the middle of our weekend in Salem, and we had a chance to visit two high schools in the area. We met the very talented students of Danvers and Marblehead High, and were able to spend time getting to know them, their goals, and had really productive, fun workshops covering stage presence, performance practices, and how to make music that makes you feel good.

That weekend was special for yet ANOTHER reason! We released a brand new single and music video! Lisa's arrangement of So We Say is now available where ever you jam out to music, and our music video is live on YouTube.

This Krystle Warren song has been in HIVE's rep for a while, and we are so happy to finally release it to the world! Krystle is a huge inspiration to us as individuals, and as a vocal ensemble. We highly recommend listening to her entire discography, but if you need to start somewhere, Thanks & Praise is a good way to introduce yourself!

Just a week after returning from the east coast, Lisa, Nina, and Moorea were back together again in San Francisco as part of the 2019 Tour of Riceboy Sleeps, written by Jónsi & Alex Somers (Sigur Rós). A small select vocal ensemble and orchestra filled the Golden Gate Theater on Monday, October 14th. The 10th Anniversary tour celebrates the large work that was inspired by a picture book of the same name released in 2006.

Next up for HIVE is a trip to Texas to be a part of the Texas Vocal Arts Convention! This gathering of vocal students, educators, and music enthusiasts takes place next month, and we cannot wait to meet everyone! We will be joined by another special guest artist, but you'll have to wait to find out who that is...
